According to New Yorkers…

“There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter — the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. […] Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.”

According to New Yorkers…

“I find so many things in the streets, and my husband makes fun of me because there’s almost not one walk I’ve taken in New York City where I haven’t found a coin. Something of value. Once I found a big metal N.”

- Sarah Jessica Parker, actress

Food: Scott’s Pizza Tours

There are not too many things that are more ‘New York’ than pizza. It seems like everywhere you go there is another pizza-by-the-slice joint. Everything claims to be the Best and the Original and Only in NYC!

Annie Update: Job Hunt begins…

I am already beginning the job hunt process. This is one of the biggest question marks of the whole experience. I am getting my resume updated and looking all fancy and starting to apply for positions.

Ugh…looking for a job is the worst job to have.

Wish me luck! :)

Website: Overheard in NY

Another of my favorite websites to read (while avoiding work) is Overheard in New York. Minneapolis has one too, but the New York ones are typically a little more out-there. I especially love when they have ones that refer to the Subway or other uniquely New York things….like the Wednesday one-liners all about conductors and trains below…classics!

Conductor: This is an express, uptown C train. You heard right: an express C train. Next stop: 125th Street. If you need local service on the Upper West Side, please transfer across the platform to the D, as in “Daddy done did it” or B, as in “bad boy Bobby Brown” train.
–C train, 59th St

Conductor: This is a Brooklyn bound B train. Like bitch.
–B train

Conductor: Never give up on life. Keep hope alive. This is 30th Avenue.
–N train, Astoria

Conductor: Thank you for riding the C train and remember: smile and the world smiles with you.
–C train

Conductor: You can switch to the A train across the platform. However, I would much rather you stay on this train.
–Downtown C train, 14th St

Conductor: This train is very crowded. If you cannot fit, please step back and wait for the next train. If you manage to get onto this very crowded train, look at the person next to you and tell them, “Howdy!”
–Queens bound F train

Conductor: Step in and stand clear of the good news.
–F train, 34th St

Conductor: Hello, and welcome to the mobile sauna bath.
–A train

Conductor: This is 175th Street. This is an A train to…This is an A train to… to nothing! Hey, does anyone know where we’re going?
–A train, 175th St

Conductor: All right, there’s a 3 train across the platform. Hurry up and make your connection, people. Get to steppin’, get to steppin’!
–1 train, Times Square

Conductor, angrily: Yo, stand clear o’ the closing doors o’ my choo-choo!

According to New Yorkers…

Q. Why do you love New York?

A. Because of takeout. I love takeout. And because it’s the most overcaffeinated city in the world, and we come here to relax. Also the sound of the subway finally arriving. The local C. Here it comes, finally. I love hearing it.

Shopping: NYC Bodegas

1. bodega

A hispanic/spanish/latin mini-mart, kind of like a 7-11, but usually smaller and more like a liquor store atmosphere. Commonly used term on the east coast, especially in the New York City region, where you will find many of these. The word came from the actual spanish word for “grocery store” – la bodega.

One thing that is typical of NYC living is their abundance of bodegas. You can’t turn your head to the left or right on any street without seeing at least one. Their convenience is key…and you can avoid having to wait in line at the overpacked Target/Trader Joe’s/Whole Foods. It is perfect for running across the street to pick up a few things.

Peas & Pickles was the bodega of choice for myself and my friends when I did a semester in Brooklyn Heights. :)

NYC Photoblog: 24gotham

One thing I love to do in anticipation of NYC is to check out some New Yorker’s blogs and photoblogs. One I visit regularly is 24gotham. Check out two sample photos below, and then go look at the site to see more pictures!
